Be An Example

Written by Frank Jamerson.

“Let no man despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1 Tim. 4:12).

Young people often think that they can be one thing and become another, but generally we become what we are. Paul gave a half dozen characteristics that every Christian should strive to exemplify.

It has been estimated that Timothy was about 38 years old when Paul wrote this to him, so that includes more than we may often think of as “young.” Regardless of age, we should be examples in word. This refers to our speech and applies to both the words and the spirit in which they are spoken. Conduct refers to behavior, which others are watching. Love refers to the love that treats others right regardless of how we feel about them. It is the kind of love God has for us. Spirit describes the spiritually minded person which is indicated in worship as well as daily life. Faith is produced by hearing, or reading God’s word. We should not wait until we are too old to do anything else to become diligent Bible students. Purity includes the whole of our being—words, attitudes and actions. “Flee youthful lusts” (2 Tim. 2:22), and live a life that will please your heavenly Father
