Apostasy

Written by Frank Jamerson.

Following quotations are from an article in the “San Antonio Express-News,”

(Sept. 6, 2003). I quote it to show what happens when brethren do not understand, or respect, Bible authority.

The article quotes Max Lucado, the popular preacher and writer at the Oak Hills church of Christ in San Antonio, and Vic King, who is “minister of missions and outreach.” The article says they are changing their name to “Oak Hills Church,” which certainly would not violate Scripture, but the other changes they are making indicates their attitude toward Scriptural authority.

The writer said, “Most Churches of Christ feature only a cappella singing. A tradition King said is based on the absence of the use of instruments in the New Testament churches. But for the first time, Oak Hills will add instruments to a new Sunday evening service, which will be geared toward young adults and will begin early next year.”

“Oak Hills also believes salvation doesn’t come through baptism, but that baptism is the initial step of obedience after salvation.” Neither the absence of New Testament authority for instrumental music, nor the presence of the necessity of baptism for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38), makes any difference to those who are more interested in drawing people than following Scripture.
