Do You Know My Jesus?
Jn. 20:24-31
Intro.
A. Who is God? “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You sent” (Jn. 17:3). Knowledge of God is essential to acceptable worship, and to morality
B. Is your God too small? He is spirit (Jn. 4:24); different names (Elohim - God, Jehovah - I Am; Adoni - plural of Adon - Lord, Master; N.T. Theos (El/Elohim), Kurios (Jehovah and Adon - Lord). Ps. 139 - presents Him as omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent.
C. Today - The Word - Jesus (Savior), Christ (Anointed) - is God or Jehovah.
Body:
A. There is one Deity (Godhead - Acts 17:29; Rom.1:20; Col. 2:9):
1. The Lord Jesus Christ was there at creation - “In the beginning God (Elohim) created the heavens and the earth” (Gen. 1:1).
2. Gen. 1:26,27 “Then God said, Let US make man in OUR likeness...So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
3. Gen. 3:22 “Then the Lord (Jehovah) God (Elohim) said, Behold the man has become like one of US, to know good and evil..” WHO IS THE WE AND US?
4. Jesus was the Creator:
Jn. 1:1-3 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God (Theos) and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”
Col. 1:15-17 - “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.”
5. Jesus is Jehovah - I AM:
Is. 40:3 “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the LORD; Make straight in the desert a highway for our God (Elohim).”
Jn. 1:23 “He said: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the LORD.” Jn. 3:28 “You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before Him.”
Jn. 5:17,18 - “But Jesus answered them, My Father has been working until now, and I have been working. Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.”
Jn. 8:58,59 - “Jesus said to them, Most assuredly I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM. Then they took up stones to throw at Him..”
Jn. 10:30 - “I and My Father are one.” (TWO are one - just as THREE are one!)
6. Dt. 6:4 - “Hear, O Israel: The LORD or God (Elohim); the LORD is one.” A united one - not numerical. “...and they shall become one flesh” (Gen. 2:24), “...Indeed the people ae one and they all have one language...Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language...So the LORD scattered them abroad” (11:6-8).
B. Names of Jesus (Is. 9:6):
1. Wonder/Wonderful - the marvel of the ages - in His nature (God and man), in His mission “O LORD, You are my God. I will exalt You, I will praise Your name, for You have done wonderful things; Your counsels of old are faithfulness and truth” (Is. 25:1). Is. 52:13-15 - is condensed version of ch. 53 - only in reverse order. Exaltation is followed by suffering; but ch. 53 suffering followed by exaltation. (Sprinkle - some think refers to cleansing, others that it is startled, amazed as they behold His exaltation...latter part of vs. favors the second.)
2. Counselor - He is both Priest and King (Zech. 6:13 “Yes, He shall build the temple of the LORD. He shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule on His throne; So He shall be a priest on His throne, and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.”) cp. Eph. 2:13-17.
3. Mighty God - “The remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the Mighty God” (Is. 11:21 - speaking of Jehovah). 7:14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.” (Mt. 1:23 “which is translated, God with us.”)
4. Everlasting Father - “Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary” (Is. 40:28).
Micah 5:2 - from Bethlehem “Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth have been from everlasting.” (Cp. Ps. 93:2 “Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting.”) Col. 1:16,17 He is creator of all things - thus Father.
5. Prince of Peace - concerning the one who entered Jerusalem riding a donkey - “He shall speak peace to the nations; His dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth” (Zech. 9:10). Heb. 7:1-3,26-28
C. Practical Lessons:
1. When we think of the Father:
a. The creator - Acts 17:28,29 - “For in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, For we are also His offspring. Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by the art and man’s devising.”
b. The re-creator - Jn. 3:3 - “Jesus answered and said to him, Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God..” Gal. 3:26,27 - “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”
2. When we think of Jesus:
a. The fulness of the Godhead - “For in Him dwells all the fulness of the Godhead bodily” (Col. 2:9).
b. The creator - Col. 1:16,17; Jn. 1:1-3
c. The Savior - “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Mt. 1:21). He saves those who obey Him (Heb. 5:8,9).
Concl Rom. 10:9-13; Phil. 2:9-11.
