Priorities
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Mt. 6:33). Notice four things suggested in this verse.
1. It contains and obligation—seek. Seeking is striving after, or coveting, which demands energy and activity.
2. It designates the object we are to seek—the kingdom of God. The kingdom is the church of the Lord (Mt. 16:18,19), or the body of Christ (Eph. 1:22,23). To be in the kingdom, church, or body of Christ is to be in Christ (Gal. 3:27). All spiritual blessings are “in Christ” (Eph. 1:3). When we are seeking the kingdom, we are seeking spiritual blessings that far out-last material blessings.
3. It establishes an order, or priority—seek first. That is easily understood but difficult to practice. It means that when we have a choice between doing something for pleasure (recreation, social events, etc.) and doing something for the kingdom of Christ, the kingdom comes first! When we put the kingdom second in our priorities, we have disregarded the teaching of the one who died for us.
4. It gives a conditional promise—all these things will be added. This refers to the material necessities of life which are added to all the spiritual blessings that Christ promised; if we put first things first.
