Who Was Michael?

Written by Frank Jamerson.

The angel, Michael, is mentioned five times in the Bible, and that is all we know about him. Daniel calls him “one of the chief princes” (Dan. 10:13). We do not know how many “chief princes” there were, but Michael was one of them. He is also called “your prince” (10:21) and “the great prince” (12:1). In the New Testament, Jude calls him “the archangel” (Jude 9), and John represents “Michael and his angels” fighting against the dragon (Rev. 12:7).

The only other angel that is named in the Bible is Gabriel. He is mentioned four times (Dan. 8:16; 9:21; Lk. 1:19,26). We do not know how many angels, or archangels there are, but we know that they are “ministering spirits” (Heb. 1:14). Would you ever get the idea from reading the Bible that Michael was Jesus or Adam? No, but two prominent religious groups born in this country so teach.

The Watchtower Society teaches that Michael was Jesus. “Being the only begotten Son of God...the Word would be prince among all other creatures. In this office he bore another name in heaven, which is ‘Michael’” (“The Truth Shall Make You Free,” p. 49).

The Bible says, “To which of the angels did He ever say: You are My Son, Today I have begotten You?” (Heb. 1:5). The implied answer is—none!  “But to the Son, He says: Your throne O God, is forever and ever” (Heb. 1:8). The Jehovah Witnesses affirm that Jesus was an angel and deny that He is God. The angel, Gabriel, told Mary that “they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, God with us” (Lk. 1:19; Mt. 1:23).  No, Jesus was not an angel.

Mormonism teaches that Adam was Michael. “And the Lord appeared unto them, and they rose up and blessed Adam, and called him Michael, the prince, the archangel” (Doctrine and Covenants 107:54). “And also with Michael, or Adam, the father of all, the prince of all, the ancient of days” (D & C 27:11).

The Bible says God made man “a little lower than the angels” (Ps. 8:4,5; Heb. 2:6-8). Since Adam was a man, he was not an angel. And since Jesus is Immanuel, and created everything that was created, He is not an angel. Thomas confessed Him to be “My Lord and My God” (Jn. 20:28). Jesus did not rebuke that response,  but said “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (Jn. 20:29).
